Unlocking Creativity Through a Mindfulness Retreat

Are you stuck in a creative rut staring at the blank page with crippling writer's block or yearning to pick up the paintbrush? Do you wish you had more time to tap into your creativity? Whether you're an entrepreneur, a professional artist, a weekend hobbyist, an accomplished musician, or a karaoke queen, everyone has a creative spark.

While we might think of creativity as something we do when we aren't "working," a recent McKinsey Consulting study suggests the opposite. Their findings show that companies and managers prioritizing creativity and innovation outperform the competition regarding revenue growth and shareholder gains. IBM surveyed over 1,500 CEOs across various industries to show how creativity is crucial for business leadership.

Think of some of the biggest players in business: Apple, Disney, Nike, and Amazon…these are all companies that value creativity, innovation, and imagination. Creativity matters!

If you're looking for fresh inspiration, look no further. We will cover a variety of ways to help you unlock your creativity and spark some joy. It's helpful to remember that creativity isn't just about talent—it's part of a mindset. When you learn how to unlock creativity, you can reignite your imagination and find inspiration for all areas of your life.

Eight Ways to Unlock Creativity

If you're ready to tap into ways to become more innovative and imaginative, let's look at some things you can do to unlock your creativity and feed your soul.

  1. Embrace the Curious

Without curiosity, people would just go through life day after day doing the same thing. But curiosity is the driver of imagination and innovation. Think of little kids; they are the most curious people, always asking questions and why, why, and how to everything! Somewhere along the way, some of us lose that wide-eyed wonder of approaching the world with a big heart and open mind.

It's time to change that. Seek out new experiences, ask questions, join in activities, and explore new hobbies that challenge you and inspire curiosity. Hobbies such as painting, drawing, or pottery will obviously put your creative side to work, but any hobby with design work provides creative exercise, like sewing, metalwork, and woodwork. Even technical

work can be creative, so don't forget coding and graphic design are just as important for the creative flow. Whatever you're called to do, do it with curiosity.

2. Play!

Most adults have lost their playful streak. When was the last time you went on a swing or a Ferris wheel, had a crazy dance party, or just indulged in a fantasy of your imagination? The weight of adulthood can leave us inflexible with rigid thought patterns, but being silly and playful can help stimulate your imagination and unlock creative thinking. Try exploring new puzzles and games that promote play while also forcing you to map out strategies like checkers or chess. Or you can get really bold and sign up for an improv class or get on stage for karaoke night—get out there and have fun!

3. Travel Far and Wide

Mark Twain famously said, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."

He was on to something! Traveling broadens your outlook and opens your mind to the greater world around you. Talking with a wide range of people—travelers and locals—from different disciplines, backgrounds, and experiences will help you see things from different perspectives and develop your imagination. Taking a genuine interest in other people's culture, customs and lives can inspire great ideas. Get curious and get out there!

4. Free Your Mind with Divergent Thinking

Have you heard about thinking divergently? It's an unstructured, free-form way to problem solve.  How do you do it? Well, for starters, you can practice with exercises such as brainstorming, mind-mapping, or free-form writing. Do you know that divergent thinkers are found to be more curious, independent, and risk-takers? People who practice divergent thinking can also quickly and spontaneously generate various possible solutions or ideas. The goal is to challenge assumptions, think beyond conventional boundaries, and explore different perspectives as you change the way you think about things.

5. Read Everything

Curious people seek inspiration from a wide variety of sources. From short stories and the classics to murder mysteries and self-help resources, choosing material that expands and exercises your imagination is a great way to unlock your creativity while exposing yourself to new stimuli and diversity. Joining a book club is a great way to make new friends, exchange ideas, branch out from your "usual" reading material, and embrace something different.

6. Stimulate Your Senses

If you're seeking our creative inspiration, engaging all of your senses can help you find that spark. Try surrounding yourself with new stimuli on a daily basis. If you listen to the same music over and over, turn on some new tunes. From movies, music, art, and podcasts to moments in your own "backyard," it's easy to try something new. Make it a challenge to visit a museum or art gallery every month, go on a different walking trail, explore a nearby town, or just take a different route to and from your work to "turn on" and engage your imagination. It's time to get out of your comfort zone and explore new things!

7. Write Down Your Thoughts

What do Leonardo de Vince, Walt Disney, and Marie Curie have in common? They were all some of the world's greatest thought leaders, and they all kept journals. Keeping a journal gives you a dedicated space to explore and capture new ideas and inspirations. You don't have to be a "writer" to keep a journal; you only have to consistently write. You might even find that the longer you journal, the more your creative thinking expands, along with the generation of new ideas.

8. Mindfulness

Stress can strip you of your natural creativity. That's because when we're stressed out, it's more challenging to tap into our creative flow and find that magical spark. But everyone has a secret power that can unlock creativity. What is it? Mindfulness. Don't overthink it—this powerful tool teaches you to be fully present so you can clear that mental clutter and create space for new ideas. And the best news is that you can do it anytime, anyplace.

You are a Creative Person. Anyone can be creative! While we might think people are born this way (and it's true some of us are more naturally creative than others), we can all learn more about the "skill" of being creative. When you practice mindfulness and strive to be curious, you'll open yourself up to new things, fantastic ideas, and thoughts, all of which lead to being a creative and imaginative leader. Just think of what you can contribute to the world once you believe in your own capability!
