Spotlight on May Mental Health Awareness Month

"There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in." ― Leonard Cohen

Every May, communities worldwide come together to observe Mental Health Awareness Month, boosting understanding of mental health issues. Initiated in 1949 by Mental Health America, this month has grown into a global movement supported by countless organizations, including the National Council for Mental Well-being and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) states one in five adults in the U.S. experience mental health issues of some kind. In the UK, Mind.org reports that every week, 1 in 6 people report experiencing the common mental health challenges of anxiety and depression. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it's more common to be diagnosed with a mental health condition than many realize, stating, "More than 50% of people will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime."

Challenges and Stigmas

While the world is slowly becoming more comfortable with discussing mental health issues, unfortunately, there is still a deep stigma attached, which often prevents people from seeking the help they so desperately need. The American Psychiatric Association notes that more than half of those with mental health conditions do not receive the treatment they need. "Often, people avoid or delay seeking treatment due to concerns about being treated differently or fears of losing their jobs and livelihood," the APA explains.

Mental Health Awareness Month highlights the significance of caring for our mental health and the need for accessible care. It's a time when advocates, patients, and families share stories, offer support, and educate their communities. The collective efforts during this month significantly contribute to the ongoing battle against stigma, encouraging a deeper understanding and acceptance of mental health challenges.

Promoting Mental Health Awareness

The 2024 Mental Health Awareness Month theme is "Take the Moment." It encourages individuals and communities to pause and prioritize mental health, acknowledging the importance of taking moments for self-care, reflection, and mental well-being without guilt or shame. The theme highlights that mental health care is not a luxury but necessary for a balanced and fulfilling life.

Everyone can contribute to promoting mental health awareness and support. Whether through advocacy, self-care, or community involvement, each action helps build a culture that talks about and prioritizes mental well-being. By “taking the moment” to focus on mental health, we can create a ripple effect that encourages others to do the same, ultimately leading to a happier, healthier, more supportive world.

Here are four ways you can prioritize mental health awareness:

1. Be a Strong Advocate

Don’t be shy! Use your voice and advocate for mental health awareness and change. Encourage open dialogues about mental health issues, contact elected officials, and stay informed about policy developments.

2. Prioritize Self-Care

Leading by example is the way to go. Make your mental health a priority to set a positive example for others. Engage in self-care practices that improve your emotional and psychological well-being, such as meditation, breathwork, yoga, exercise, or simply taking a moment to relax and decompress.

3. Celebrate Mental Well-being

Embrace and honor your mental health journey. Take pride and celebrate the steps you've taken to prioritize your mental health and inspire others to do the same.

4. Be the Difference

Get involved in your community. Consider becoming certified as a Mental Health First Aider or Instructor, volunteer with local mental health organizations, or participate in awareness campaigns.
