Preparing Your Body and Mind for the Spring Transition

The month of March is often seen as one big spring tease. We wait, jackets in hand but keeping the warm winter coats in close reach. Will she show up today?

For many of us, this is the time of year when winter is starting to loosen its freezing grip, and the warmer days bring signs of springtime emerging from the long winter darkness. The quiet, introspective energy of winter, where we’ve focused on rest and restoration, turns to an emergence of light, new beginnings and possibilities.

For many months, we’ve been cozy in our winter cocoon, but as the Spring Equinox approaches, with the perfect balance of light and dark, it’s just the right moment to realign our energies with the earth's natural rhythms. As the days grow longer and the natural world around us bursts into bloom, it’s time to shed the heaviness of winter and prepare for the lighter, brighter months ahead.

Through intention and goal setting, we can cultivate clarity, vitality, and a renewed sense of purpose. Spring is the perfect time to focus on renewal and growth in your life as you embrace the transition and step into the light of a new season.

Embrace New Beginnings

Transitions can be challenging—even those we are anxiously looking forward to. The sudden shift from the deep rest and stillness of winter to the vibrant energy of spring can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed and out of balance. Like bears coming out of months of hibernation mode, we also start to poke our heads outside—ready for change but needing time for our bodies and minds to adjust.

Many natural changes are happening in your body right now—some you may not even be aware of. For example:

  • With increased sunlight, your body absorbs more Vitamin D, giving you a natural energy and mood boost.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder is slowly fading away. With longer daylight hours, the symptoms of SAD will soon be a thing of the past as you emerge from the wintery darkness.

  • A shift in appetite. As the weather warms up, you might feel your appetite gravitating from heavy, hearty winter foods towards lighter, fresher fruits and vegetables. You might also feel your hydration needs changing as the temperatures rise, so don’t forget to drink more water.

When we understand and align ourselves with the changing rhythms and harmony of spring, we can ease into spring feeling grounded, refreshed, and ready to embrace the energy of new beginnings.

Reflections of Winter, Stepping into Spring

By incorporating small intentional practices like gentle, mindful movement, reflection, guided breathwork and holistic rituals, we sync up with the earth's energy and ease ourselves into spring. This can be as simple as a meditative walk as you take in the new sights, smells, colours, and sounds surrounding you. What is blooming? What is melting? Pay attention to the changes in temperature, the way the sun feels on your skin and the tiny blossoms of the plants all around you.

Gentle exercises on what we’re leaving behind can also be a powerful tool to ease the transition of seasons. Perhaps winter felt dark and difficult, while spring feels hopeful and full of new possibilities.

Give yourself some time to remember and reflect on winter as you leave her behind. Are there any particular thoughts, emotions, patterns and experiences that come up? What would you like to change about that season? A journaling practice can help you process how you feel, identify what issues stand out for you, and what action you need to take. Set your intention for what you wish to cultivate in this new season of beginnings.

New Beginnings for Your Body

During the winter-spring transition, it’s especially important to move your body. The inertia from winter (all that hibernation!) can cause us to slow down more than any other time of year. You may find some stagnation in your muscles, cells and energy.

Begin with gentle movement and workouts as you gradually expand and strengthen your exercise routine over the coming weeks. From outdoor walks in nature to yoga at home, give your body lots of attention.

Grounding exercises give you solid rooting so you can expand with the spring energy.

If you’re feeling a bit sluggish and still sleeping a little more than usual, that’s ok. Your circadian rhythms need some time to adjust. The full transition into spring takes about a month after the Equinox (March 20). Just like the trees that spend most of their energy growing their roots to prepare for summer, the human body also needs time and rest to actively “root” and wake up into our new spring bodies.
